Yemen latest news: Two US hostages freed

Two US citizens have been freed in Yemen, they flown to neighbouring Oman, told the US officials. According to the US Secretary of State John Kerry, the US citizens left the country together with Yemenis hurt in a recent funeral bombing in Sanaa, the capital city.

US and Oman were co-operating in their attempting to free two US citizens. The US thanked Oman for mediating, US officials added that such a “humanitarian gesture” from the rebels is acknowledged.

The latest news from Yemen are not good, the country has been devastated by a war between government forces and those allied to the Houthi rebel movement. Since 2015, about 7,000 people have been killed, the majority of them from air strikes by a Saudi-led coalition that backs the president against the Houthi rebels.

Two US citizens were flown to Oman alongside a number of people injured in the 8 October attack on a funeral hall in Sanaa. At least 140 civilians were killed that day, the Saudi-led coalition said it had carried out the attack based on bad information.
