Magnitude 7.5 quake hits north of New Zealand

The powerful tsunami hit the northern part of New Zealand, the magnitude 7.5 quake was registered by geo service.

The powerful quake struck in the wee hours of Thursday, about 415 kilometres east of Vao in New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the Pacific. The tremor was registered at a depth of 10 km, the US Geological Survey confirmed on Wednesday.

The powerful undersea earthquake struck north of New Zealand, triggering a tsunami alert for the region. The tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within the next three hours, according to the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The Warning Center also issued tsunami watches for New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu and other Pacific islands. All these small nations should be prepared for the evacuation of their populations.
